The basics
What is Bema?
A workspace for the whole college application process: the Common App, essays, deadlines and each school’s requirements, recommenders, financial aid and final decisions. Students do the work; parents can follow along once the student invites them in.
Who is it for?
High school students applying to U.S. colleges, usually in junior or senior year, and the parents or guardians helping them. You need to be 13 or older to have an account.
How much does it cost?
Nothing during the beta. See Pricing for what we’ve committed to after that.
Is Bema affiliated with the Common App?
No. Bema is independent and is not affiliated with the Common Application, the College Board, ACT, or the U.S. Department of Education.
Applying
Does Bema submit my applications?
No. You submit on the Common App, each school’s portal and StudentAid.gov. Bema is where you prepare, so that when you get there, everything is ready to paste in.
Can Bema import my answers into the Common App automatically?
No, and nothing can do this honestly. The Common App doesn’t offer a way for outside apps to fill in a student’s application, and doing it any other way would mean handing over your login. Bema gives you a copy button on every field and section instead.
Do I need my Common App login?
Never. Bema will not ask for it.
Which colleges are in Bema?
More than 2,900 U.S. colleges for search and your list, with extra requirement details for many popular schools.
Essays and AI
Does the AI write my essay?
No. It won’t write a paragraph, an opening line or an “example,” even if asked. It gives feedback, asks questions and fixes grammar and spelling in sentences you wrote. Our AI & Academic Integrity policy explains why.
Is using Bema’s AI cheating?
Getting feedback on your own writing is what teachers, counselors and tutors have always done. The line is someone else writing it, and Bema’s AI stays on the right side of that line. Some schools ask how you used AI, so answer honestly.
Is there a limit on AI use?
Each account has a daily allowance that covers a heavy evening of work. Settings shows how much you’ve used. Everything else keeps working if you hit it.
Parents
What can a parent see?
After the student accepts an invitation: overall progress, deadlines and requirements, essay drafts, and the parent’s own FAFSA section. Parents can comment and suggest wording. More on parents.
Can a parent edit my essay?
No. A parent’s suggestion is a proposal; only the student can accept it. Parents also can’t read the student’s conversations with the AI coach or counselor.
We’re a separated family. How does that work?
Each parent connects on their own and neither sees the other’s account. Removing one parent doesn’t affect the other. The FAFSA planner helps work out which parent files.
Can my student remove my access?
Yes, at any time from their Settings. We built it that way on purpose.
Account and data
Is it on iPhone?
Yes. The iPhone app is in beta on TestFlight now, with the App Store to follow. You can also use Bema in any web browser. How to get it.
If I use the web and my phone, do they stay in sync?
Yes. It’s one account on one server, so a change on either shows up on the other.
Do you store my Social Security number?
No. Bema refuses to store Social Security numbers, FSA IDs and similar identifiers.
Can I download or delete my data?
Yes. Settings has “Download your data” and “Delete account.” See Your Data.
I forgot my password.
